My house is upside down this week with painters inside giving the family room, dining room, and foyer a fresh coat of paint in lighter colors. If you saw my Instagram stories you saw the chaos. 🙂 In two days a flooring crew is coming to rip out the damaged hardwood so we can replace it and restain it.
I’ve had this chest of drawers sitting in my foyer for twelve years, I picked it up at a thrift store and stained it dark walnut many moons ago. I’ve always liked having a dresser like this by the front door for miscellaneous storage and a place to set keys and mail. Our California house is traditional in style and this classic piece fits the space well. Since the walls were repainted, I thought I’d update the dresser too.
I primed and repainted it in a taupe hue and replaced the old knobs with timeless brass ring pulls (sources below). I used a new furniture paint I’ve never used before, the Country Chic line in the color Soiree which has a matte finish and covered very well. I’m so pleased with how it turned out!
I’m sharing an Instagram reels today showing the process of refinishing it including all the supplies I used. It took less than two hours to give this dresser a new look.

I brightened the pulls with a coat of Gold Leaf Rub n’ Buff for extra shine.
New pulls are an easy update for any piece of furniture. I keep my eyes open for affordable ones to upgrade furniture, below are a few unique budget friendly choices in brass for your furniture or cabinet updates too.
