PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia police are investigating after a man was shot and killed during an apparent attempted carjacking.
It happened around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday at 12th and Porter streets in South Philadelphia.
Chopper 6 was overhead as police officers cordoned off the crime scene.
Police say the victim intervened when his friend was being carjacked but was shot and killed during the ordeal.
“It appears that the shooter or shooters were standing very, very close to this 50-year-old victim when the shot was fired since the shell casing was just a few inches from his head,’ said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Investigators said they’re being told that two males approached a female who was in the driver’s seat of the vehicle while it was idling.
She was forced out of the car at gunpoint and told to give up the keys and the vehicle.
Police say her friend showed up and intervened, but that’s when one of the suspects fired the shot, killing the man.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
While he was not in the car when this started, investigators say he was the owner of the vehicle.
“The two males who committed this crime were last seen in a red, small SUV, possibly a Kia Soul…last seen going east on Porter Street,” Small said.
No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.
