Indicted in the Justice Department investigation into the misuse of classified documents, Trump faces seven counts, according to a CNN source.
“This marks the first time a former president has faced federal charges, and it is the second time Trump has been charged criminally this year.”
Trump also posted on Truth Social that he has been indicted.
From CNN’s Evan Perez:
“Former President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that he has been summoned to appear at the Federal Courthouse in Miami on Tuesday at 3 p.m. local time.
“In a statement echoing his Truth Social posts, Trump called it a “dark day” for the country following his indictment in the classified documents investigation.”
“I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!” Trump said in the statement Thursday.
CBS News reported the following:
“In a post to his account on Truth Social, Trump said attorneys with the Justice Department informed him he was indicted over the “boxes hoax” and he has been called to appear at the federal courthouse in Miami on Tuesday.
“I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States, who received far more votes than any sitting President in the History of our Country, and is currently leading, by far, all Candidates, both Democrat and Republican, in Polls of the 2024 Presidential Election.”
“A source familiar with the case said the former president has been charged in a multi-count indictment involving the retention of national defense information and obstruction.
“The decision to pursue an indictment of Trump is a remarkable and unprecedented step, marking the first time the Justice Department has brought federal charges against a former president. Trump’s attorneys met with Justice Department officials, including Smith, on June 5 and discussed concerns about prosecutors’ efforts in the inquiry.”
