When my girl requested a reading chair for her bedroom, sherpa was the first thought that came to mind. She loves a cozy vibe, and her room felt like the perfect place to play with this design trend. But being that sherpa is more trendy than timeless, at least in my opinion, I didn’t want to spend a fortune. With sherpa upholstery being a newer trend, second-hand options were scarce. So I scoured the internet for new affordable options.
And I found so many great budget-friendly chairs that look just as nice as their higher-end counterparts. Being that even the splurge options are polyester, I just couldn’t bring myself to even consider them when the save options were so good. Can you even tell which are the saves and which are the splurges below?
1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8
As you know, I opted for number one. I chose this chair because as I look at what the next few years will bring for my almost-a-senior girl, I like that this chair could also be used as a comfy desk chair. With dorm/apartment life on the horizon, it just felt like a good choice for a chair that she could take with her. A chair she can use now, but one that will easily fit into a small living space. Something from her childhood bedroom to remind her of home will hopefully be a comfort to her. I don’t know, maybe it’s weird to put that much thought into a chair I bought at Walmart, but I think it just goes to show that you can be an intentional, thoughtful shopper even when you’re purchasing a lower-cost item from a big box store.
I think sometimes we think of the splurge option as being the better, more quality investment purchase. But the save option can often be a better fit in more ways than one.
In this case, I felt like there was no difference in upholstery quality at all, with all options being polyester. So it really came down to how the chair was made. And because I want her to be able to take this with her, the fact that this chair comes apart and could easily be transported to college in the back of a car is what won me over.

When it comes to playing with design trends, I do tend to lean towards the save option. I’m much more apt to qualify a splurge when it’s something I know will stand the test of time. What are your thoughts?
A few more options……
