Chatham has made history at Penn Relays.
The Cougars won the boys 4×800 Championship of America in 7:47.66 on Friday afternoon, breaking its school record for the second time in as many days. Senior Ryan Beegle anchored in 1:52.47, edging Kingston College of Jamaica anchor Ainsley Campbell by two hundredths of a second.
The boys were presented with a Penn Relays “wagon wheel,” an oversized, round wooden plaque. It is Chatham’s first Penn Relays title, and the first boys 4×8 win by an American team since 2013.
Senior Charlie Henne broke through a crowd and put Chatham in third place after the opening leg. Sophomore Adam Petitjean, who ran the second leg, broke two minutes for the first time (1:59.41). Senior Leo Valenzuela handed off in fourth place, less than two seconds behind Kingston College.
This is the second straight year the Cougars have advanced to the 4×8 final. They placed ninth last spring.
Delbarton DMR brings home medals
Collin Boler often turns in top performances under the hottest spotlights. Friday night at Penn Relays was no different.
Boler brought the Delbarton distance medley up to third place in 10:15.33. Christ School from Asheville, North Carolina won in 9:58.15, the second-best time in Penn Relays history, followed by Christian Brothers.
Collin Boler, a Princeton-bound senior, moved the Green Wave from 10th with a 4:11.24 1,600-meter anchor. His slightly older twin brother, Brian Boler, had led off on the 1,200-meter leg, followed by juniors Ryan Harper (400) and Everett Jania.
“It may not have been what we wanted, but I think we all ran great,” said Jania, who ran the 800-meter leg. “The energy was way different from what I’ve experienced. I went to New Balance Nationals indoors, but there were so many more people at Penn, and the crowds were deafening. When we were running, we heard the screams of everyone.”
Last spring, Collin Boler was sixth in the mile (4:14.84) and Brian Boler placed 11th in the 3,000 meters (8:43.11) after being seeded 24th.
