The thought of rock climbing may conjure images of adventurers hanging from boulders with a picturesque sunrise in the backdrop. But the sights of walls with color-coded holds and floors lined with cushioned mats are also part of a rock climbing experience.
Practice makes perfect, and that’s what one could achieve by getting into rock climbing by way of a regional gym specializing in the activity. Though everyone may have a preference on what area of the city they’d want to visit or what activity they may want to try, each of the spots we’re highlighting offers visitors a chance to experience the thrill on their own terms, in the great indoors.
Fancy a guided intro session? Want to climb around for a bit on your own or with a friend? Have an interest in top-roping only? Collectively, these spots can accommodate those wishes and more.
Before diving into our recommendations, here’s some advice:
If you are entirely new to bouldering, rock climbing and top-roping, we’d recommend that you consider booking an initial session or buddying up with a seasoned comrade to ensure you’re easing into things well.
Some facilities may have differing guidelines on working with newcomers; they may require newbies to sign waivers and/or watch videos or complete other tasks before getting moving. There’s a fair bit to keep in mind with climbing – how to fall, how to warm up your limbs and so on – and, in our opinion, even more so with top-roping, which is offered at some area climbing gyms.
Aside from developing a foundation to generally feel confident while climbing or belaying, there are some etiquette items to also keep in mind – all of which could be learned via reviewing tips on gym websites and talking with staffers in person. (For example, if someone is waiting to climb in the area where you are, be respectful and wrap up your “problem,” or color-coded wall puzzle, promptly so they may have a turn.)
Now that we’ve primed you on some basic “rules of the wall,” read on for more on where to experience camaraderie in the local climbing community.
Iron City Boulders
Iron City Boulders sits in a fairly quiet part of Lawrenceville in an unassuming location. But the energy and potential found inside are next-level.
The welcoming facility for climbers of all stripes is a fine place to spark a passion for this hobby but also use the time to witness others who are on their own journeys. (Though climbers here are friendly and welcoming, do take their lead on their level of desired interaction; some come to have a full workout, complete with AirPods and a customized playlist, while others may be up for more engagement.)
Public Lands
The Cranberry Township location of Public Lands can serve as a twofer destination for adventure enthusiasts: In addition to stocking key merch for hikers, campers and others who embrace the great outdoors, the location also features a climbing wall. Did you need climbing gear, such as shoes? Snag a rental pair, buy some or bring your own.
Book a time to climb online or just walk in; the team at Public Lands also books themed climbs, including youth nights. There’ll be a guide on hand to help, if you’re not in a formal session and doing your own thing (solo or with a pal), for a set timeframe (there’s a 15-minute option, which could be great for someone looking to build their skill set and familiarity). For those in a formal class, expect a bit more coaching.
ASCEND Climbing
Point Breeze and South Side climbers win, as ASCEND Climbing has a post in both neighborhoods (plus two outside of the region). Longtime climb and belay devotees may know that the East End hub is near The Climbing Wall’s former space; this site came to fruition at the hands of former patrons of that business.
With ASCEND, there’s a lot to get into for kids and adults – from parties to corporate group sessions and yoga classes (excellent cross-training). The trained team members are on hand for check-in, guided sessions and general support during any free-flowing visits.
We recommend using the top-roping section’s auto-belay setup once you’re greenlit for solo navigation on the wall; it’s a great way to not only become better at top-roping but also lessen any climbing nerves in general.
ASCEND also plans outings outside of the facilities, such as a combination yoga-climb session in the great outdoors; keep an eye out for posted fliers in the gyms or digital messaging to spell out the details.
FA Climbing
FA Station Square is a local outpost from First Ascent; its Station Square location is prime for those commuting in from the office and elsewhere, making its in-location bike rack a must for anyone getting around on two wheels.
The welcoming environment is conducive to building a solid skill base, whether top-roping, climbing or taking a yoga class.
Check out merch, like shoes, onsite to see what the team recommends; you may buy any favorite kicks during your visit, too. Cross-train on fitness equipment or book a private session for a memorable group outing. Youth-centric programming, such as climbing camp, is offered here, too.
Climb North
We’d be remiss for not mentioning Climb North, which marks 30 years in operation this year in Hampton Township. The gym is affiliated with and adjacent to Jewart’s Gymnastics; it is open daily and offers time for free climbing, camps and competitive league activity. There are more than 5,000 square feet of space for bouldering for novice and experienced climbers.
