Alfred J. Saner, 92, of Lakewood, passed away at sea, vacationing on a cruise ship, on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
Coach Saner built the Point Pleasant Borough High School Football Program into a Shore Conference power in the 1960’s and 70’s. He made such an impact as a coach that the football field was named after him: ‘Al Saner Football Field’. His coaching ability put him in the NJ Football Coaches Hall of Fame. Close friend Tom Farrell said: “Known for his gruff demeanor on the outside when he was Point Borough’ head coach, he was a close friend to so many because of how much he cared for others.”
Born and raised in Guttenberg, NJ, Al resided in Point Pleasant for 30 years prior to settling in Lakewood. He was a well-known and loved teacher and football coach at Point Pleasant Borough High School for 36 years.
Predeceased by his parents, Joseph John Saner and Caroline (Heib) Saner; his first wife of 53 years, Janice Saner. He is survived by his devoted wife of 11 years, Marie (Baker) Comune; his sons, James Saner and Gary Saner and his wife, Belinda; his stepson, John Comune and wife, Kristin; his step daughters, Mary Francis and husband, John, Lillian Frangipane and husband, Robby; his grandchildren, Ashley, Daniel and Michelle; and his step grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Charley and Lucian; and his sisters, Gloria Kruger and Dolores Garatano.
A viewing will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024 from 4-8pm at The Church of St. Martha, 3800 Herbertsville Road, Point Pleasant. A Funeral Mass will be offered 11am on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at The Church of St. Martha, Point Pleasant. Military honors and burial will follow at the Brig. Gen. Wm C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown. O’Brien Funeral Home, Brick is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, 520 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Newark, NJ 07102.
