A long-time resident of Sea Girt, Robert Torrone passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 31st at Jersey Shore Medical Center. Born in New York, he was the eldest child of Joseph and Josephine (Lee) Torrone.
A graduate of Rutgers Preparatory School where he played basketball and soccer, Bob continued his education at Rutgers University. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and was a doctoral candidate in history, as well as a teaching assistant. While at Rutgers, Bob co-authored the book, Urban Growth. His favorite thing about Rutgers was being a Theta Chi brother.
Bob taught social studies at Highland Park High School for 18 years where he also loved coaching the JV basketball team. Always the entrepreneur, he left teaching to open two successful businesses, Manalapan Custom Woodworking and Kitchens by Torrone, one of the country’s leading Wood-Mode cabinet dealerships.
Always a sports fanatic, Bob traveled throughout Europe skiing and golfing. He loved his house in Manchester Village, Vermont where he was a member of the Equinox Golf Club. Several years ago, Bob challenged himself to play every golf course in Vermont. It took a while, but he completed his dream.
Bob was a long-time member of the Battleground Country Club where he enjoyed many rounds of golf with cherished friends. Because of Bob’s fun-loving, caring, and generous spirit, he built many long-lasting friendships. Whether it was family, colleagues, golf buddies or the waitress who served him at the local restaurant he frequented, Bob had a knack for making people feel valued and appreciated.
Bob’s family enjoyed his sarcastic sense of humor — well, most of the time. With every new niece, nephew, grandchild, or great grandchild that joined the family, Bob was ecstatic because he had a brand-new audience for his same old corny jokes. As far as his grandchildren are concerned, he was the best Pop in the world. He never missed their sports events and planned many fun outings, always demonstrating that they were the center of his life.
Bob was predeceased by his parents and his brother, George. He is survived by his wife, Marion, daughter, Susan Bowen, and grandchildren David (Brittany) and Taylor. He will also be missed by his great grandchildren Aubrey, Eliania, Ashley, Elijah, Riley and Tieghen, his brother, Joseph (Loreen) and countless family and friends.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 12-4 p.m., with a Funeral Service being held at 3:30 p.m. at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35, Wall.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, JDRF, P.O. Box 5021, Hagerstown, MD, 21741-5012.
