SWATTING INCIDENT FORMER PITTSBURGH PUBLIC SAFETY DIRECTOR WENDELL HISSRICH WAS BROUGHT ON AS SENIOR DIRECTOR FOR REGIONAL SECURITY. SUPERVISORS HAVE BEEN HIRED TO BE IN THE SCHOOLS, AND HISSRICH SAYS IN THE COMING MONTHS THEY PLAN TO EXPAND THAT TO ADD SIX MORE. IT’S A SAFETY AND SECURITY OFFICER, NOT JUST THE SECURITY OFFICER, PER SE. YOU’RE MORE FAR MORE LIKELY TO HAVE A MEDICAL EMERGENCY WITHIN THE SCHOOL, AND THEY’LL BE TRAINED TO HANDLE THAT. AND AT THE SAME TIME, WE’RE GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE’S EQUIPMENT, APPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT THROUGHOUT ALL THE SCHOOLS SO THAT THEY CAN WORK WITH WHATEVER IS CONFRONTED TO THEM. Security is being increased at schools in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.Wendell Hissrich was brought on last summer as security director. He’s the former Pittsburgh Public Safety director.Hissrich says Catholic schools are not immune to things like threats and after hearing concerns from staffers, the department is now expanding.Four regional security supervisors have been hired. Hissrich says offers are soon going out to six additional officer candidates. “It’s a safety and security officer, not just a security officer, per se,” Hissrich said Thursday. “You’re far more likely to have a medical emergency within the school, and they will be trained to handle that. And at the same time, we’re going to make sure that there is appropriate equipment throughout all the schools so that they can work with whatever is confronted to them.”The diocese is also touting a successful 2023. Officials are pointing to factors like above-average test scores and a low teacher-to-student ratio, as well as a 100% graduation rate.
