CLAYSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ)– Sara Whysong celebrated her eleventh birthday party at the Claysburg Senior Center Friday evening and she used it as a way to raise money for a good cause.
Instead of asking for presents, she told her friends and family in their invitations for donations to the Bedford Humane Society. It’s been almost three weeks since 90 dogs were rescued from a Bedford County home and taken to the humane society.
“I felt sad for the dogs because I have one of my own and I want the other dogs to feel the way that she does,” Whysong said. “My parents were talking about the dogs and so I heard about it. I decided for my birthday I would just collect donations.”
Collectively they were able to raise over $1,000 for the humane society along with other pet supplies brought by guests. Whysong’s family friend Mandy Fickes says that when she saw the invite she wasn’t surprised at all.
“Sara is a great girl,” Fickes said. “She loves animals, she loves to help people. When she found out the humane society needed help she thought this was the perfect way.”
Whysong says that she hopes people see this story and are inspired to make donations of their own to the humane society. She still got plenty of birthday presents and says that she hopes the community keeps helping out.

“I just hope that they take really good care of the dogs and that the dogs get good homes,” Whysong said.
