Demolition begins at Tree of Life building in Squirrel Hill
ON THE PLANS HERE. THAT’S RIGHT. THIS DEMOLITION WILL TAKE A COUPLE OF MONTHS. MOST OF THE OLD BUILDING WILL COME DOWN WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A HISTORIC AND RECOGNIZABLE PORTION RIGHT AT THE CORNER OVER HERE. WE CAN TELL YOU, HOWEVER, THAT WHAT COMES HERE NEXT WILL BE A REIMAGINING OF TREE OF LIFE. 80% OF THE OLD TREE OF LIFE BUILDING IS COMING DOWN IN THIS DEMOLITION OF THE PLACE WHERE 11 WORSHIPERS WERE KILLED IN THE WORST ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACK IN AMERICAN HISTORY. TODAY IS BOTH AN END AND A BEGINNING. AND AS YOU SAID, A CHAPTER WE HAVE TO, IN LIFE, CLOSE ONE CHAPTER IN ORDER TO OPEN A NEW ONE. WHAT WILL BE BUILT HERE WILL BE NOT ONLY A PLACE OF WORSHIP, BUT A MEMORIAL AND A MUSEUM. IT’S A MULTIPLE PURPOSE INSTITUTION. SO THE SYNAGOGUE, THE TREE OF LIFE CONGREGATION WILL BE WORSHIPING IN THIS SPACE. THEY WILL HAVE A NEW SANCTUARY AND OFFICE SPACE AT THE SAME TIME. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A MEMORIAL TO THE 11 VICTIMS LOST. SO IT’S ROOTED IN MEMORY. BUT REMEMBERING THE LIVES THAT THAT THE VICTIMS AND THE FAMILIES LED, NOT THE WAY THEY DIED, WHAT WILL STILL STAND IN THE NEW MEMORIAL FROM THE OLD STRUCTURE WILL BE THE WALLS OF THE SANCTUARY AT THE CORNER OF SHADY AND WILKINS. WHILE TODAY MARKS A DIFFICULT DAY AS WE LET GO OF PART OF THE TREE OF LIFE THAT MY FAMILY’S BEEN PART OF FOR THE LAST 60 PLUS YEARS, IT ALSO IS A NECESSARY STEP FOR US TO BEGIN ON A THE PROCESS OF HEALING AND OF CREATING A NEW INSTITUTION IN. FUNDRAISING FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW AND REIMAGINED TREE OF LIFE AND THE PROGRAMS THAT WILL OPERATE HERE IS CONTINUING. REPORTIN
