MANASQUAN — The borough council Friday authorized Mayor Edward Donovan to sign a shared services agreement with Monmouth County, committing the borough to partner with the county to purchase the property of 86 Main St., currently Michael Sullivan’s Service Center.
The authorization was one of the resolutions passed during the council’s Dec. 29 meeting, its last one of the year. Mayor Donovan said that once he signs the agreement, the Monmouth County Board of Commissioners will vote on a decision to enter into the agreement from their end.
Mayor Donovan previously told The Coast Star that the borough and the county had a verbal but informal agreement for the county to help the borough purchase 86 Main St., but the shared services agreement, if completed on the county’s end, would formalize that pact.
The partnership comes from an ongoing effort by the borough to make traffic safety improvements to the intersection of Main, Broad and South Streets, which has experienced problematic traffic for years.
Other efforts taken by the borough this year to move forward on the project include authorizing a set of two different kinds of environmental studies, which point out any environmental issues at the site and allow the borough to properly address them.
In addition to authorizing the mayor to sign the shared services agreement, the council also approved the minutes of its three previous meetings: Nov. 13, Dec. 4 and Dec. 18.
