A woman who was killed when her car struck a tractor-trailer Friday afternoon on Route 15 was a Gettysburg College administrator, according to the school’s student newspaper.
The Adams County coroner on Tuesday also provided additional details about the collision in Latimore Township, which killed Sara Gifford, 35.
The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. on Dec. 22 at the intersection of Route 15 and Bonners Hill Road. Adams County Chief Deputy Coroner Frances Dutrow said Tuesday a tractor-trailer was pulling out from the side road across Route 15, making a left turn to head southbound on the highway. How far the truck made it across the lanes of Route 15 at the time of the collision was unclear.
Gifford’s vehicle was heading north on Route 15 and struck the trailer, according to the coroner’s office. Gifford, a York County resident, was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force injuries, according to Dutrow.
A campus-wide email from the Gettysburg College president informed the college community of Gifford’s death, according to The Gettysburgian, the college newspaper. Gifford was the school’s assistant director of International Student Services.
Gifford’s death “leaves a hole in the fabric of our community,” college president Bob Iuliano wrote, according to the newspaper.
“You may have seen Sara on campus with her family as they attended many College events together,” Iuliano continued, according to The Gettysburgian. “She helped countless Gettysburg students to feel at home on campus, and she was always there to offer support and a listening ear when you needed her most. Sara was a trusted mentor, colleague, and friend.”
