We love watching Christmas movies, and one of our favorite Christmas movies is Dr Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas – the animated classic or the Jim Carrey version.

So who better to feature on a front door than the infamous Grinch! If you’re looking to add a touch of whimsy to your Christmas decor, consider crafting a Grinch wreath. This delightful and quirky wreath captures the mischievous spirit of the beloved Dr. Seuss character and is sure to bring a smile to the faces of all who encounter it. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through creating your very own Grinch wreath, perfect for adorning your front door or gifting to a fellow holiday enthusiast.

Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a beginner looking for a creative outlet, making this Grinch wreath DIY is a delightful way to usher in the holiday season.

This DIY Grinch wreath follows a process a lot like the Dollar Tree candy cane wreath and is the easiest Grinch decor to make — much simpler and less expensive than a Grinch deco mesh wreath or a wreath made from lime green ruffle fabric or cut strips, or even the darling grinch legs wreath I saw the other day. (And PS, how cute is this Grinch-themed Christmas tree decor set!)

How to Make a Grinch Wreath: DIY Step-by-Step Tutorial

Supplies

Can’t find green faux fur? Use a green feather boa, greenery garland, or felt sheet instead.

Can’t find a red Santa scarf? A red fleece or fabric scarf will work, too, glued along the front of the wreath form.

Instructions

Step 1: Prep Scarf

Begin by cutting off one end of the scarf, where the pom-pom ball is located.

Step 2: Cover the Wreath Form

Slide the scarf over the candy cane wreath form and trim off excess fabric.

Step 3: Secure with Glue

Fold over the excess fabric on both ends and hot glue in place around the wire wreath frame.

Step 4: Make the Grinch Hand

Trace your hand on the back of the faux fur, making the fingers long and pointed.

Use an x-acto knife or razor blade to carefully cut the faux fur backing without cutting through the fur. It’s best to make a few passes to ensure a precise cut. Do NOT use scissors for this step or the faux fur will not look right!

Flip over the fabric and push the faux fur together to create finger-like shapes. If you’d like to pose the fingers more, you could glue pipe cleaners to the back of the faux fur to make the finger sections bendable and poseable, and wrap the faux fur around the pipe cleaners.

Step 5: Add the Grinch Hand to the Wreath

Apply hot glue to the end of the wreath and press the faux fur on top. This edge will be covered up so don’t stress about making it look perfect. You can also glue the sides of the finger sections together to define the fingers more, if you’d like.

Step 6: Add the Santa Suit Sleeve

Cut the bottom section of the Santa hat to make the end of the arm resemble a santa suit jacket sleeve (approximately 7 inches). Hot glue around the end of the candy cane wreath form over the green faux fur.

Step 7: Add the Stolen Ornament

Hot glue two fingers together, securing them in place with the string from the ornament in the middle.

While the classic Grinch wreath DIY is undeniably charming, you can customize your creation to suit your personal style. Consider these variations:

• Place a heart (two sizes too small!) or a star tree topper or a jingle bell in the Grinch’s hand instead of an ornament. Or use a lighted LED ornament for extra fun!
• Add a DIY custom painted wood sign, such as Welcome to Whoville or Merry Grinchmas or even You’re a Mean One to your door decor.
• Wrap a Christmas garland and/or string lights (battery powered) around the Grinch arm for extra festive flair.
• Add a chimney (made from a cardboard box) for the Grinch’s arm to come out of, or add a stocking for the ornament to drop into.

The candy cane wreath makes the curved arm shape just perfectly, but you could also use a circle wreath base and just have the hand attached at any point with the ornament hanging in the middle.

We found all of the supplies at our local Dollar Tree! The wreath form, scarf, faux fur, and ornaments are part of the seasonal section, so if you’re shopping later in the season and can’t find them, you can likely find a sub at the local craft store.

Yes, the Grinch wreath is a beginner-friendly craft with simple steps and readily available materials. Make it yourself, or with the kids during a movie marathon (though it will take less than an hour to make!)
