Marco Gonzales traded to Pirates, 2 days after he was acquired by Braves from Mariners
WELL, DESPITE THE IMPROVEMENT, THE PIRATES MISSED THE PLAYOFFS FOR AN EIGHTH STRAIGHT SEASON. IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A SILVER LINING, THEY FINISHED WITH THEIR BEST RECORD IN FIVE YEARS. PITTSBURGH’S ACTION SPORTS DIRECTOR, ANDREW STOCKEY, HAD A CHANCE TO SIT DOWN WITH PIRATES MANAGER DEREK SHELTON ABOUT THE SEASON AND WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE BUCS. WE’VE TALKED ABOUT WANTING TO IMPROVE. IT’S NOT WHERE WE WANT TO BE. YOU KNOW, WE WANT TO BE IN A SITUATION WHERE, YOU KNOW, WE’RE COMPETING FOR A PLAYOFF POSITION DURING THE LAST WEEK OF THE SEASON, BUT IN TERMS OF OUR YOUNG PLAYERS GETTING BETTER AND GIVING THEM MAJOR LEAGUE OPPORTUNITIES AND MAJOR LEAGUE AT BATS AND INNINGS IN THAT WAY IT’S BEEN A SUCCESS. BUT IN NO WAY IS IT, YOU KNOW WHAT WE’RE STRIVING TO DO OR TO BE. HAS IT BEEN A CHALLENGE NOT HAVING THE SAME STEADY LINEUP ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE SEASON, BRINGING ALL THESE NEW PLAYERS? IT’S BEEN A CHALLENGE, BUT IT’S ALSO BEEN EXCITING BECAUSE WE’RE SEEING YOU KNOW, THE DEVELOPMENT OF GUYS AT THE MAJOR LEAGUE LEVEL. I MEAN, LET’S JUST TAKE JARED TRIOLO OVER THE LAST THREE WEEKS TO SEE HOW MUCH BETTER HE’S GOT AT THE BIG LEAGUE LEVEL AND THE ADJUSTMENT THAT HE’S MAKING AND THEN SEEING THE SUCCESS LIKE THAT’S EXCITING. IS THERE NOW PRESSURE GOING TO NEXT SEASON TO TAKE THAT NEXT STEP TO BE A CONTENDER? BECAUSE YOU’VE SHOWN IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON THAT YOU CAN WIN BALL GAMES, THAT YOU CAN BE IN THE IN THE COMPETITION AND ALSO THE WAY YOU STARTED THE SEASON. YEAH, I THINK THE PRESSURE IS THE FACT THAT WHAT OUR EXPECTATION IS AND OUR EXPECTATION IS TO CONTINUE TO GET BETTER AND THE FACT THAT WE HAVE IMPROVED BY THIS MANY GAMES. YEAH, BUT THAT’S GOOD PRESSURE. THAT’S THE PRESSURE YOU WANT. THAT’S THE HEY, WE’RE GETTING CLOSER TO WHAT WE START TALKING ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO. OKAY. YOUR OFFSEASON WISH LIST, WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU WANT TO HAVE FOR NEXT SEASON? ONE POSITION, ONE TYPE OF PLAYER? WELL, I THINK WE NEED TO BUILD OUR STARTING PITCHER DEPTH. I THINK THAT’S IMPORTANT. NOW THAT’S AN INTERESTING PLACE ON THE FREE AGENT MARKET BECAUSE IT CAN GET REALLY VOLATILE AND IT CAN GO BOTH WAYS. SO I THINK THAT’S IMPORTANT. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE SEASON FOR YOU, WAS IT THE NINE NOTHING COMEBACK WE’VE HAD SOME GOOD MOMENTS, SOME WALK OFF MOMENTS, SOME REALLY COOL THINGS. I MEAN, MITCH AND OVIE BOTH THROWING COMPLETE GAMES, WHICH IS KIND OF GONE AWAY SEEING KUCH GET 200, WATCHING KUCH WALK TO THE PLATE, YOU KNOW OPENING DAY. THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT LIKE TUGS ON YOUR HEARTSTRINGS. BUT THE NINE NOTHING GAME WAS PROBABLY THE BEST GRADE YOURSELF. HOW DID YOU DO AS A MANAGER THIS YEAR? I DON’T KNOW. I THINK I GOT BETTER. I THINK THERE’S THINGS I CAN STILL GET BETTER AT. YOU KNOW, JUST THE OVERALL CONTINUED AWARENESS OF OUR GROUP IN HOW WE NEED TO TRAIN, HOW WE NEED TO PERFORM. SO HOPEFULLY I’M, YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY I’M GETTING BETTER. I THINK I’M GETTING I’M DEFINITELY LOOKING OLDER. I DON’T KNOW, BUT GETTING WISER
