Elizabeth Borough police are seeking the public’s help to identify the man suspected of vandalizing a laundromat in West Elizabeth.See the video aboveStreams of Water Laundry serves up to 70 people daily, according to the owner and West Elizabeth Mayor Kathy Welty.“I would just ask, treat this as if it were your own,” Welty said.Welty said quite the opposite was caught on her security cameras. A man is seen doing a load of laundry before going from dryer to dryer, breaking open the lower compartment doors.Police Chief William Sombo said the man is then seen collecting whatever loose change or money could be found underneath the dryers. “There were three juveniles in there that he gave money to, and there was also two other individuals, another female, and a male in there doing their clothes, and it doesn’t look like the people that were there knew what he was doing,” Sombo said.Welty said about 10 dryers were vandalized.“Ten of our 18 dryers, the doors were hanging open,” Welty said.Welty said when the lower compartment is broken or left open the dryers won’t work, resulting in a loss in business.“So that’s a whole bank of dryers that don’t service anybody, and we service about 12 different communities in this little laundromat,” Welty said.She said the repairs cost hundreds of dollars.“You feel violated when somebody vandalizes your property, and of course, you feel bad for your customers, because they can’t use it,” Welty said.Elizabeth Borough police ask that if you recognize the suspect, you give them a call.
