There is only one area football team still alive in pursuit of a district championship. Sixth-seeded Downingtown West will travel to play No. 5 Central Bucks South for the District 1 Class 6A championship Friday. The Whippets are coming off a big 17-14 win over archrival Downingtown East in the semifinals to avenge a regular-season loss to the Cougars. CB South also avenged an earlier defeat to its neighborhood rival by beating top-seeded CB West, 42-14. Here is a look at the championship battle.
Downingtown West (11-2) at CB South (12-1), 7 p.m.
Downingtown West will face a Titans team that loves to run the football. CB South ran 57 times for 457 yards against CB West last week. The Titans feature a three-headed monster in the backfield. They are a throwback to Suburban One teams that just line up and try to play bully ball against you.
Running back Anthony Leonardi has over 1,300 yards rushing on the season. He carried the football 23 times for 301 yards and three scores in the win over the Bucks. Corey Moore and quarterback Owen Pinkerton are also good runners. They run behind a very big senior laden offensive line that averages 275 pounds up front. Leonardi has good break away speed and is the Titans main running threat. He can run inside the tackles or break things to the edge.
The Titans average 291 yards rushing per game and they rarely throw the football. Pinkerton attempted just three passes last week, completeing one for seven yards. Senior Collin Goetter, a Monmouth University recruit is their best offensive lineman. Senior linebacker Jim Wade leads a defense that gives up 13 points per game.
The Titans defense has pitched four shutouts on the season — Neshaminy, Harry S. Truman, Council Rock North and Abington. They have allowed 53 points in their three playoff wins.
The Whippets were very impressive in bringing down Downingtown East. Senior quarterback Quinn Henicle threw for 197 yards and a score and scored the winning touchdown on a 4-yard run with 16 seconds remaining.
Receiver Jake Kucera caught six passes for 66 yards and was running open in the secondary all game. Kucera and Dean Hangey are over the 750-yard mark for the season and both are game breakers.
It was the West running attack, which garnered 139 yards, that was maybe more impressive. The Whippets have had some trouble establishing an effective running game at times this season, but they outmuscled the Cougars on both sides of the lines and will have to do that again against a very big and strong Titans team. CB South has defeated Coatesville (21-20), Spring-Ford (35-19) and CB West to get to the championship game.
The winner will advance to the PIAA semifinals whey they will face either Nazareth or St. Joseph Prep.
