Former Manasquan Mayor for 20 years, John L. Winterstella passed away surrounded by his loving children, devoted grandchildren, and his beloved wife Gail Winterstella. Known for his sense of humor, his bright and upbeat outlook on life, his love for the outdoors, most especially fishing, John will be greatly missed by his wonderful friends and the surrounding community that he devoted so much of his life to serving.
Throughout his life, John served not only as an elected official, but through participating on a wide variety of boards and charities. John’s lifetime of remarkable public service to the people of Monmouth and Manasquan positively shaped the lives of so many people. John’s storied career included being a proud member of the nationally recognized AH club and past President of the NJ League of Municipalities, in addition to being a member of the Spring Lake-Brielle Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. A long-time member of Manasquan United Methodist Church, John’s religious faith gave him tremendous peace and acceptance in the final moments of his life. His final wishes were to be celebrated by all who knew him by simply raising a glass, sharing a laugh, and leaving with a smile. John also wanted everyone to know that his last meal was a home-baked chocolate chip cookie made by his daughter Judy, followed by a sip of coffee — his ‘perfect’ meal.
He is survived by his wife Gail Winterstella, his sister Virginia Dare Kaplan, his brother Father Joseph Saint Veltri, his two daughters Judith Razzetti and Kristen Breitweiser, his son-in-law, Richard A. Razzetti Jr., his two granddaughters, Lauren Razzetti and Caroline Breitweiser, and his grandson Trey Razzetti. He is remembered by his sister-in-law Mary Ellen Mannion and John and Matt Mannion, in addition to his lovable dog, Maggie. John was pre-deceased by his first wife, Judith Oberg Winterstella and his son-in-law Ronald Breitweiser.
The family will have a private memorial service in the Spring. Given his love for the church, in lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name can be made to the Manasquan United Methodist Church or Spring Lake/Brielle Rotary Club.
