Gov. Phil Murphy admits that Ørsted’s decision to pull out of the state was a big setback for the state’s clean energy efforts. He just can’t understand why it’s being celebrated by some.
“There are folks out there applauding this — for reasons that are beyond my comprehension,” he said.
The governor said he has two questions for them:
“Are you opposed to thousands of union jobs — because that’s what a project like this entails?” he asked. “And, secondly, what’s your other idea for South Jersey’s economy? What’s plan B?”
Murphy, speaking at Fort Monmouth after a presentation to again announce that Netflix is coming to the state, said offshore wind projects will create thousands of union jobs and produce enough energy to power 4.5 million homes.
“It is a game-changer in the state’s economy, including in South Jersey,” he said.
Murphy said the state will not be deterred. He noted the state has received a lot of interest for its third solicitation.
“While this is a big bump on the road, the offshore wind industry is alive and well and will continue to be one of the big industries in the state going forward,” he said. “So, while there’s been a lot of real supply chain and inflation issues in the offshore wind industry, that’s real … there’s a lot of interest in participating in our program.
“This will continue to be a legacy important industry for us.”
