South Philadelphia-based rock ‘n’ roll artist Low Cut Connie has released the official trailer for his new film Art Dealers, a feature length companion to his critically-acclaimed album Art Dealers that was released last month via Contender Records. Following its official premiere at the Richmond International Film Festival where it took home their 2023 Artistic Vision Award, the film will screen at the Philadelphia Film Festival, as well as Minneapolis’ Sound Unseen Festival.
In the tradition of art-world documentaries like Stop Making Sense, Paris is Burning, Crumb, and American Movie, Art Dealers follows eccentric rock n roll artist Adam Weiner aka Low Cut Connie and his band and crew as they attempt to mount a concert production of their new album Art Dealers album during a 3 night run at Sony Hall and The Blue Note in Covid-era New York City. The stunning high-intensity performances are laid against a backdrop of 15 years of footage that shows an artist plagued by bad luck, but who attacks each performance with humor and stagecraft. Low Cut Connie’s unglamorous day-to-day circumstances are shown in contrast to the undeniable magic of the stage show. The film entertains and inspires while also making a broader statement about the difficult landscape of art and entertainment in modern America.
Rolling Stone spoke with Adam Weiner about the film, proclaiming “As a music doc, Art Dealers succeeds on the strength of the musicians it profiles: not just the group’s flamboyant frontman, but the ragtag bunch of players who join him as he schleps his piano around the country. As a concert film, it expertly summons the sweaty revival that is a Low Cut Connie gig by culling the best from three shows at New York’s Sony Hall and jazz outpost the Blue Note.”
The first public screening of the Art Dealers film will take place on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ and will be accompanied by a solo piano performance by Low Cut Connie. A full band performance with special guests will follow on Friday, December 22. Tickets are on sale now.
Low Cut Connie released their eighth album Art Dealers to critical acclaim in September, with the lead single “Are You Gonna Run?” marking his debut on Billboard’s AAA Radio Chart. The album was praised by Consequence of Sound, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, NPR’s World Cafe, NPR Music, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Rolling Stone, Sound Opinions and many more.
