Mary Maples named senior adviser at EDA

Highly respected executive Mary Maples will be joining the New Jersey Economic Development Authority as a senior adviser to CEO Tim Sullivan — serving as a thought leader on complex, large-scale priority projects as well as supporting authority-wide strategic planning initiatives, it was announced.

Maples will start Oct. 10.

Maples has held many key roles in her career. She most recently was interim CEO of University Hospital in Newark (a role she assumed after serving as chief legal officer and corporate secretary).

Prior to that, she served as deputy chief counsel to Gov. Phil Murphy and senior counsel to Gov. Chris Christie. In addition to her extensive experience in New Jersey government, Maples served for more than a decade within the Central Intelligence Agency, culminating with her role as assistant general counsel, handling matters of litigation, administrative law, contracts and congressional affairs.

Maples had accepted a similar position with the EDA last spring. But, when University Hospital CEO Shereef Elnahal announced he was leaving, Maples remained at the hospital until a full-time replacement could be named.

Maples holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and a J.D. from American University.
