There’s a crispness in the air and that means it’s time to get scared.
Halloween season is just about to go into full swing, so fans of ghosts, goblins, pumpkins and the rest that goes bump in the night will be in their glory.
Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary, 2027 Fairmount Ave., Philadelphia, is up and running through Nov. 1. This year, though, there are reimagined experiences to go along with returning favorites.
“We’re thrilled to bring visitors another year of festive fun,” said Erin Davis, director of Halloween Nights. “It takes months of thoughtful planning to ensure that every season of Halloween Nights is bigger and better than the last. In addition to revamping attractions, we are always making small improvements that have a big impact on the visitor experience. This year, we’re adding more scare zones and photo opportunities, enhancing our characters and sets, and increasing the number of performers throughout the festival.”
The outdoor courtyard formerly known as Gargoyle Gardens has been rethemed to Pumpkin Plaza, featuring new props and photo opportunities inspired by traditional Halloween imagery like pumpkins, hay bales and skeletons. The festive atmosphere of Pumpkin Plaza is enhanced by fan-favorite vendors like French Toast Bites.
In Pumpkin Plaza, visitors also encounter The Boogie Monsters Halloween Night’s premier hip-hop dance team, featuring new characters inspired by classic horror tropes like mummies and Frankenstein.
Halloween Nights also expands several scare zones throughout the festival for the 2023 season, including a courtyard in the northwest corner of the penitentiary complex that now allows two paths for visitors to choose from: scary, or less scary.
In addition, Halloween Nights continues its popular option to “opt in” for a more intense experience. If they choose, visitors can pick up a glow necklace from the newly designed “glowzebo” at the entrance to the festival. Anyone wearing a glow necklace may be grabbed, sent into hidden passageways, and even temporarily separated from their group.
“From the moment visitors step through Eastern State’s imposing front gate, they will feel truly immersed in the completely unique world of Halloween Nights,” said Davis.
Ticket prices start at $39 and are available at https://easternstate.org/halloween/.
Bates Motel
Meanwhile, one of the premier haunted experiences in the nation returns for another year as the Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride at 1835 Middletown Road in Glen Mills is ready to bring a scare into the night.
The famous hayride with some of the most impressive haunts along the route will be riding again for the second year in a row after it was transformed into a walking trail for a couple of years.
The Revenge of the Scarecrows Haunted Corn Trail also returns with animatronic monsters and over 30 actors in full makeup and custom costumes.
The highlight, of course, is the haunted house that looms over everything else. Expect new and exciting frights as actors and special effects bring nightmares to life.

Haunted eats
If you want to extend Halloween into your dinner, the place to be is Craftsman Row Saloon in Philadelphia.
Once again this year, Craftsman Row (112 S. Eighth St., Philadelphia) is decked out for the “Nightmare Before Christmas” Halloween pop-up experience.

“We love sharing our energy for the Halloween spirit and creating our food, cocktails and shakes for the spooky season,” said owner George Tsiouris. “It brings a smile to our faces as we watch our offerings being enjoyed. Anytime we think of Halloween, we think of fun moments and of course candy. One of our over-the-top shakes has the best of the best with a keepsake and is sure to bring smiles to peoples faces and bellies.
