(PLAINFIELD, NJ) — The Plainfield Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of their acclaimed music director Charles Prince, invites you to join them for a very diverse and exciting 104th season filled with timeless classics and rare opportunities to hear some less performed but spectacular pieces.
The season opens on October 14, 2023 with “Spanish Fiesta,” celebrating Spanish music and composers. Featured on this program will be the widely recognized and important Mexican composer Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2, the popular guitar piece by Joaquín Rodrigo, Fantasia para un gentilhombre (Fantasia for a Gentleman) with guest soloist Carlos Cuestas and Manuel de Falla’s ballet pantomime, El amor brujo (“Love, The Sorcerer”) with mezzo soprano, Cheri Rose Katz.
On November 18, 2023, the concert centers on a “Prague Connection.” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 in D major, K. 504 (“Prague”) was debuted in Prague where he traveled to attend a performance of his opera, The Marriage of Figaro.” One of the masterpieces of the cello solo orchestral repertoire is Czech composer, Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104, B. 191. PSO Principal cellist, Jameson Platte will be the featured soloist.
Their annual free afternoon Family Concert will take place on January 27, 2024. “Dances from Around the World” will showcase how people around the world express themselves through dance.
“Just Strings” is the theme for the March 16, 2024 concert. The audience will be treated to a rich and varied representation of strings-alone orchestral literature. The program will include Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Sinfonietta #1 for Strings, Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Metamorphosen by Richard Strauss.

The climax of the season will be the April 20, 2024 program, “Journey Through the Night,” presenting Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 in E minor, perhaps the least performed of his symphonies but one of pure genius. The performance will be preceded by Charles Prince’s “Chat with Charles,” bringing personal insights to this work.
