BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Bedford County elementary schools on Tuesday celebrated the 24th anniversary of Community Reading Day.
It’s a program that’s designed to promote literacy and career exploration throughout the schools.
The Bedford County Chamber of Commerce coordinates the event every year and brings in volunteers from the community to read to children in Pre-K through third-grade classrooms.
One of the schools participating in community reading day is the Northern Bedford County Elementary School.
“I love reading to the kids. They pick up words, they pick up themes, and it just helps their development and skill-building. Just simply listening is a skill building,” Amber Snyder, a volunteer who read to students at the elementary school said.
Trevor Replogle, the principal of the Northern Bedford Elementary School, also has five carts full of books at the entrance for students to take home with them.

More than 700 bookmarks were distributed to each second and third grader in the county so they could have fun reading and continue it.
