Angela ‘Ann’ Romanelli Hanlon of Spring Lake Heights, formerly of Carlstadt and Rutherford, NJ, died peacefully at home on March 7, 2024. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Thomas J. Hanlon, her sister Mary Pinto of Wood Ridge, and two brothers, Joseph Romanelli of East Rutherford and John Romanelli Jr. of Wood Ridge. Born July 3, 1926, she grew up in an Italian speaking family, learning English when she started grade school. Growing up during the depression, she came to love school and its activities, becoming a cheerleader, school play actor, and choir member. She always maintained that during those hard times school was all they had.
Ann became a high school teacher at Lodi H.S., North Arlington H.S., Nutley H.S., and East Rutherford H.S. which later became Henry P. Becton Regional H.S. She taught Business, became a Business Department Chair, then a Guidance Counselor and ultimately Guidance Director. She impacted hundreds of students’ lives. She received her bachelor’s degree from Paterson State Teachers College after graduating salutatorian from her high school class and qualifying for a state scholarship. She went on to obtain a Master’s degree from Fordham University and completed doctoral studies at Montclair State University. She taught for 25 years and after retirement obtained her real estate license from Bergen Community College and was employed at Marion J. Fallon Realty in Spring Lake for 20 years, breaking every sales record they had with her honesty, integrity, and sharp business skills.
Ann was a member of NEA/NJEA, NREA/NJREA, she was a daily communicant of St. Catharine/St. Margaret parish in Spring Lake; she became a Third Order Carmelite, and was a member of the NJ pro-life committee. She enjoyed travel, bicycling, tennis, ballroom dancing, skiing and walking the boardwalk well into her 90’s. She always loved meeting new people, and experiencing new things. She is survived by two daughters, Catherine A. Hanlon MD, and Carol L. Hanlon Steets Esq. and her husband Mark Steets, and a son, Colonel John M. Hanlon USAF and his wife Victoria Hanlon, as well as her five grandchildren Cathleen, Christian, Caroline, Thomas, and Matthew whom she adored.
Visitation was on Sunday, March 10, 2024 from 2-6pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. Funeral Mass was held Monday, March 11, 2024, 10 am at St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake followed by burial in St. Catharine Cemetery, Wall. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Parish of St. Catharine/St. Margaret in Spring Lake NJ.
