NEW OXFORD. Pa. (WHTM) — When Patty Musselman learned she was selected as an abc27 Remarkable Woman, she was shocked.
“I was shocked, I was like, ‘Doug, what did you do?” she said.
Doug Wherley is Mussselman’s boss at New Oxford High School. He’s the Conewago Valley School District athletic director and he nominated Patty, his administrative assistant, to be honored.
“I was very excited for her,” he said. “[Patty is] one of the hardest working people that I’ve ever worked with and she is so caring and goes well beyond any job description I’ve ever read,” he said.
Musselman’s job description keeps her plenty busy, but when she started hearing about hungry students, she knew she had to do more.
When a girl came to her and shared that her mom struggles to feed her and her three siblings, Patty remembers crying with her and making the decision to help.
In 2016 she started “Pack Pals,” with her own space in the high school where she stores food for low-income kids.
Musselman works hard to raise enough donations from the community to be able provide enough food for hungry students in all five schools in the district.
“It’s just heartbreaking, the need for these kids and the stories and… the families that would call me and say, ‘Thank you, I didn’t know how I was going to buy groceries for my kids this week,” she said.
When students head home for the weekend and they can’t access school food, they get a full bag from Musselman.
“She just grabs hold and takes control and gets things done. In a very organized and passionate way,” Keelie Tullis said.
Tullis is Musselman’s co-chair of Pink Out, a local foundation that raises money to support women with cancer.
Musselman is motivated by the memory of her grandmother who had cancer.
Pink Out has raised $1.4 million over the years. Now, they’re planning for another big fundraiser this summer.
Patty’s daughter Ashley is grown and a mother herself now. Her husband Andy marvels at her energy.
“He just says you need to learn how to say no. But he knows I can’t.”
For being dedicated to helping others in the New Oxford, Hanover area and demonstrating excellence in her job and volunteer work, Patty Musselman is an abc27 remarkable woman.
