BELLEFONTE, Pa. (WTAJ) – A former Penn State student accused of vehicular homicide is now in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Ahmed Alqubaisi, who is from the United Arab Emirates, attended Penn State on a student visa. He is not currently enrolled in an academic program in the U.S., according to court records, which is a violation of the terms of his visa.
Alqubaisi was charged with vehicular homicide after allegedly hitting and killing Lovisa Arnesson-Cronhamre, also an international student at Penn State, with his BMW M3 in September 2023. He was released from custody after posting his $3 million bail.
Alqubaisi is also accused of multiple violations of his bail conditions. In response, the Centre County District Attorney’s Office is seeking an emergency revocation of bail. According to a motion filed with the court, Alqubaisi requested a modification of bail to permit him to travel outside of Centre County to Harrisburg, claiming that he accepted admission at Harrisburg Area Community College after being suspended from Penn State. However, records reflected that Alqubaisi was not enrolled and not attending classes at the school.
Through his electronic ankle monitor, which he wore as a term of his bail, the Centre County Probation and Parole Department was able to determine that Alqubaisi was still in Centre County on a day he was allegedly supposed to be in class in Harrisburg.
The District Attorney’s office also said that Alqubaisi changed permanent residences without notifying the court bail agency within 48 hours, which he was required to do per the terms of his bail.
In a letter filed with the Centre County court, Alqubaisi’s probation officer stated that he has been unable to make contact with the defendant since Jan. 29, despite calling and texting both Alqubaisi and his attorney on multiple occasions. Alqubaisi did not appear for a Feb. 27 appointment with his probation officer, who had been alerted to multiple strap tampers in the days prior, to check the ankle monitor.
Alqubaisi was detained by ICE on March 5 for being out of status and is currently housed at the Clinton County Correctional Facility. He is scheduled to appear at the Centre County court on March 18 for a criminal pre-trial conference.
