With great sadness, we announce the passing of Celestino Charles Matteo, born February 8, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY to his loving parents Cosmo and Concetta (née Battapaglia) Matteo. Charles peacefully departed this world on March 2, 2024.
On Saturday, March 16th, at 1:30 pm. there will be a service at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, with burial following. 37-36 N Jefferson Heights, Catskill, NY 12414
In addition to the profound impact on the lives of many, Charles faced the heartbreaking loss of two of his beloved daughters, Debbie and Nicole, who predeceased him. Charles is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Eileen, whose unwavering love and support sustained him throughout their journey together. He leaves behind his cherished daughter Lisa and her husband Edward Flesch, who were a source of constant joy and companionship in his life; their children Brian, Austin, Zachary, and Hayleigh, and their precious great-grandchildren. Charles is also survived by his sister Marie Dill, whose bond with Charlie held a lifetime of shared memories and experiences; her daughters Lorie Destasio and Christina O’Brien, son Frank O’Brien, Lori Williams, Scott Heinl, and adored great-niece and great- nephews.
Charles Matteo considered many places to be his home throughout his adventurous and well-lived life. After bidding farewell to Brooklyn, Charlie found a welcoming home in Metuchen, where he built many connections. Yet, the allure of the Catskills beckoned him, and here he found peace and inspiration in the mountains. However, it was the ebb and flow of the ocean that drew Charlie to Wall, where he lived with Eileen until their recent move to the Poconos.
Charlie also had a remarkably diverse and industrious career. His work ethic and passion for excellence were evident throughout the various roles he undertook. Beginning his career as a long-distance truck driver is a testament to his spirit of adventure. He transitioned into the corporate world working first for Continental Plastics, then General Electric, and lastly Novatec Plastics before retiring. Yet retirement did not signal a time of rest for Charlie. Instead, he found a new calling at Jost Auto Center, demonstrating his dedication to service and his ability to tackle diverse challenges.
Charlie’s love for NASCAR races echoed his memories of his younger days spent at the Englishtown Speedway. Beyond the fast-paced world of racing, he found solace in the artistry of woodworking. His hands crafted pieces that were a reflection of his dedication and skill.
The depth of love that surrounded Celestino Charles Matteo is a testament to the profound impact he had on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. His warmth, kindness, and genuine nature endeared him to many, creating lasting connections that went well beyond mere acquaintanceship.
As we navigate the pain of his loss, let us also celebrate the immeasurable love that Charlie shared and the enduring impact he had on the lives of those who had the privilege of calling him friend or family. May the memories of his love and the warmth of his spirit continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were touched by his presence.
