One of Pittsburgh’s newest nonprofits is on a mission to support the sober lifestyle through a series of free events. For the first time, the Teetotal Initiative takes the sober fun on the road to Ross Township’s Sunken Bus Studios. The city’s top sober and sober-allied comedians will come together to make you LOL and prove that “alcohol and other substances are not necessary to have a good time.” Hosted by JC Coccoli, the comedy showcase features Ken Garr, Kimberly Bennett, Anne Casper, Trevor Austin and Georgia Warder. Resident sober bartender Kyle Turner crafts the night’s “lip-smacking, zero-proof cocktails that will make your taste buds dance with joy.” We can drink to that. Register.

Experience a triple-header of contemporary art when the North Side museum hosts this opening celebration for three new installations featured at its 1414 Monterey space. Celebrate filmmaking’s biggest night of the year with a party honoring the golden age of Hollywood. Explore the science behind modern blockbusters, along with the haute couture, high-tech and nostalgia that went into making the old flicks we love. Kick off the weekend on Saturday at Allegheny City Brewing on the North Side, where the free Arts & Crafts Event for Mental Health Healing starts at noon. On Sunday, head to Velum Fermentation on the South Side for a Self Defense Class (tickets required) at 11 a.m. According to the website, Babesburgh events hope to “intentionally center on welcoming women from different communities and cultures.” Information.

Saturday, March 9: “Everlasting Plastics: at Carnegie Museum of Art
3-6 p.m.
From the famous pool scene in “The Graduate” to the Shell cracker plant in Beaver, plastics have pervaded modern society. A new exhibition opening today at the Carnegie Museum of Art examines “our relationship with plasticity — both as a metaphor and material construction.” The exhibit makes its North American debut in Pittsburgh after opening at the 2023 Venice Biennale of Architecture. Five U.S. artists, architects and designers explore how plastics “shape and erode contemporary ecologies, economies and the built environment.” The exhibit has been adapted for the Pittsburgh presentation to respond to “a region known for its inextricable link to the petrochemical manufacturing of consumer.” During the opening celebration, meet the artists, makers and curatorial team.
Saturday, March 9: Sunset Hike in South Park

March coming in like a lamb means it’s time to get out there and enjoy the extended daylight hours. Join longtime South Park residents as they lead this free leisurely hike. Stop along the 2.5-mile route to learn about the historic South Park Cascades and take in some spring stargazing. Meet the group at 120 Corrigan Drive. Headlamps will be provided. Register.
Sunday, March 10: Pittsburgh Zine Fair Mixer and Swap at Trace Brewing
