BELMAR —Droves of visitors, many clad in festive attire and costumes in a sea of green down Main Street, swarmed the streets of Lake Como and Belmar with high spirits last weekend to partake in the 51st Annual Belmar/Lake Como St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
With sunny skies and warm temperatures, the two boroughs welcomed its largest crowd yet this past Sunday, March 3 to celebrate Irish culture as part of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the state.
“Gorgeous weather, great parade, and probably the biggest crowd ever,” said Chip Cavanaugh, parade committee chairman. “It’s really great – the parade’s as big as ever and everybody seems to be having a good time, it came out perfect.”
An estimated 6,500 marchers, 15 pipe-and-drum bands and six marching bands took to the streets to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as part of one of the most anticipated parades in the area.
For the first time in the parade’s history, this year’s parade was led by four designated grand marshals: Hon. Edward Neafsey and the Casserly sisters; Michelle Casserly, Kacey Casserly and Megan Levis.
