Thursday, Feb. 22: ‘Highrises’ Happy Hour Book Launch at Ollie’s Gastropub

Celebrate the country’s landmark architecture surrounded by our city’s stunning skyline. Pittsburgh writer Mark Houser and Philadelphia artist Chris Hytha will share their passion for architecture and the process for creating their new book, “Highrises Art Deco: 100 Spectacular Skyscrapers from the Roaring ’20s to the Great Depression,” at the bar on the top floor of the historic Oliver Building (Embassy Suites by Hilton).
Signed books and prints featuring Pittsburgh skyscrapers will be on sale at a 20% discount. And you can win a signed copy of the book and a pair of tickets for Houser’s upcoming Antique Skyscrapers Rooftop Views tour. Tickets.
Thursday, Feb. 22: ART & The Body: Andrea Peña at the Mattress Factory

If you have not yet visited Andrea Peña’s new installation, “States of Transmutation,” at the Mattress Factory, tonight’s one-of-a-kind event is a chance to experience the work in thought-provoking ways. Taking place inside Peña’s dynamic work, the behind-the-scenes event begins with a dance performance by the Pittsburgh-based duo slowdanger. Following the performance, Peña will be joined in conversation by multidisciplinary designer Madeline Gannon — dubbed “The Robot Whisperer” — and Harrison Apple, co-director of the Pittsburgh Queer History Project and associate director of Carnegie Mellon University’s Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry. Tired of the same old game night at home? Creativity, strategy and chance converge at Carnegie Museum of Art’s new game night series. Spark your inner (friendly) competitor while exploring the museum’s collection. Friday, Feb. 23 & Saturday, Feb. 24: Polar Plunge at Acrisure Stadium

With the mild temps and sunny days we’re having this winter, you have no excuse not to take the plunge! Benefiting Special Olympics Pennsylvania, the two-day splash-tacular includes the Plungetown food and entertainment area, yard games and music by DJ Eric of Fireside Events. First up on Friday, some 1,000 adventurous students will take to the water for the Cool Schools Plunge. Then it’s adult time for the Happy Hour Plunge from 2 to 4 p.m. hosted by Pittsburgh Brewing Co. Make waves on Saturday when the marquee Polar Plunge starts at 9 a.m. Not brave enough to jump in? Take a seat in the viewing areas to cheer on your people and try the Virtual Polar Pop at home. Register.
Friday, Feb. 23: ‘Skeleton Crew’ at the Barebones Black Box Theater

To kick off 2024, barebones productions takes audiences into the heart of one of the last auto stamping plants in Detroit. The year is 2008 — the start of the Great Recession. The lines “between blue collar and white collar becomes blurred,” in the third work of Dominique Morisseau’s Detroit cycle trilogy. The recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant, the award-winning writer and actress is a leading voice in contemporary American theater. Directed by Tomé Cousin, “Skeleton Crew” features renowned jazz vocalist Etta Cox, along with Saige Smith, Richard McBride, Brenden Peifer and Mario Quinn Lyles. Saturday, Feb. 24: Helpers of Pittsburgh: Celebrating Ukrainian Resilience at the Carnegie Borough Building
1-5 p.m.
As the second anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine approaches, the cozy borough of Carnegie aims to unite the community during this inaugural indoor street fair. Co-presented by DTCare and the Ukrainian Cultural and Humanitarian Institute, the free event includes cultural performances, art, stories, music and activities. Carnegie’s own Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church will be selling authentic Ukrainian cuisine and traditional baked goods. Educational displays will highlight the efforts of Pittsburgh organizations supporting relief efforts. Information.
Saturday, Feb. 24: South Side Soup Contest on the South Side

Get your spoons ready because soup’s on! On the South Side, that is. The Brashear Association and South Side Chamber of Commerce team up to serve soup, spotlight the historic neighborhood and give local businesses a boost during this annual culinary event. With 20 mom-and-pop businesses serving as host stops, this year’s mouth-watering “soup route” has so much to savor — from Carmella’s, Cupka’s, La Palapa and The Pub Chip Shop, to Sly Fox Brewery, The Speckled Egg, Spork Pit BBQ and much more. Proceeds support the Brashear Association‘s food pantry program and the South Side Chamber of Commerce. Tickets.
Saturday, Feb. 24: Catherine Trendz’s GRWM Runway Experience at Velum Fermentation
6 p.m.
Couture, sustainability and empowerment meet tonight on the South Side. Set against the cool backdrop of Velum Fermentation, Pittsburgh-based fashion designer Imani Batts will debut her GRWM Runway Collection. Founder of Catherine Trendz, Batts created the event to “empower Black hair, Black culture and the Black experience through fashion and performance arts.” Adding to the glamor will be performances by Sankofa Village for the Arts, poet Haley Clancy and the FroGang Foundation, plus a sneak peek of a mini-documentary produced by Batts and Eric Lewis. In addition, the event showcases local Black-owned businesses. Admission is donation-based, with proceeds supporting free hairstyling for children this Easter. Tickets.
