The No. 3 ranked West Chester University women’s lacrosse team’s six-goal outburst in the final 15 minutes put the finishing touches on a 14-8 non-conference victory against No. 17 Mercy Saturday at Vonnie Gros Field.
West Chester (2-0) rattled off five straight tallies at the beginning of the fourth that opened up an otherwise very tightly contested match between two of the top teams in the country. Mercy scored only one goal in the first quarter, as West Chester goalie Jessica Gorr, a Bishop Shanahan alum, made six saves, including three point-blank stops. Gorr finished the game with nine saves.
Senior Hannah Stanislawczyk led the Golden Rams with four goals and one assist for her second consecutive five-point game. Graduate student Jess Harrison registered her second straight hat trick as well. Julia Littlewood, a Conestoga High School alum, finished with a pair of goals and an assist for three points while Madeline Edinger posted a pair of goals.
Men’s lacrosse
Immaculata 19, Cairn 4 >> The Mighty Macs gave Will Pilat his first win as Immaculata’s head coach on Saturday. The Mighty Macs were led by Bailey Manion (six goals, four assists), David Azzarano (two goals, four assists), Ryan Gorman (career-high four goals), Joseph Biuso (one goal, four assists), Connor Teears (two goals, two assists) and Matthew Frame (one goal, one assist).
Men’s basketball
West Chester 97, Mansfield 63 >> The Golden Rams (17-9, 14-6) were led by Elijah Allen, who scored a game-high 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting, along with eight rebounds and a pair of assists in this Saturday win. Allen was one of four Golden Rams in double figures as he was joined by Robert Smith (19 points), Jordan Kellier (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Saleem Payne (11 points, seven rebounds).
Women’s basketball
West Chester 78, Mansfield 56 >> Emily McAteer led all scorers with 27 points on 11-of-21 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds to help lead the Golden Rams (21-5, 16-4) to victory Saturday. McAteer was one of four Golden Rams to score in double figures in the victory as Leah Johnson scored 21, while Michelle Kozicki and Anna McTamney tallied 11 and 10 points respectively.
College baseball
Immaculata earns split >> The Mighty Macs opened their 2024 season Saturday with a doubleheader split against host Rutgers Camden, losing the first game 4-1 and winning the second 4-0. In the second game, starting pitcher Stephen Dibattista allowed only one hit in four innings pitched, Shawn Haut had two RBIs, and Alex Lepage picked up the save, throwing three shutout innings and allowing only one hit.
Women’s gymnastics
West Chester 194.125, William & Mary 192.275 >> West Chester University’s squad (6-4) posted its highest score of the season in defeating William & Mary University in a Gymnastics East Conference (GEC) meet Saturday. Sarah Eskew put up a career-best in the All-Around with a 39.025. She also had season and career highs on both the balance beam and the vault. Shannon Carroll hit season and career bests on both the vault and the floor exercise. Caroline Cascadden earned a first-place ribbon on the balance beam with a 9.875, Kristina Rodriguez and Natalie Marshall each tied for second on the beam, Eskew was fourth on beam with a 9.775 and Madison Whitaker was fifth with a 9.75 as West Chester swept the top five spots in that event.
