RADNOR — Radnor officials say a dog took a hold of a rabid raccoon inside a township park. Now the dog is being treated for the disease.
The incident happened Friday, Feb. 16, at approximately 9 a.m., when a resident was walking on the trails at Skunk Hollow. They encountered a raccoon that appeared to be sick near the “Boy Scout Bridge.” The resident contacted Michael Maratea, the township’s ordinance enforcement officer with the Radnor Police Department Auxiliary Services Division, to report the possibility of a sick animal.
While Radnor Police waited for the resident to point out the raccoon, an unleashed dog came down the hill and immediately started wrestling with the raccoon.
The dog then grabbed the raccoon in its mouth. After a few moments, the dog released the raccoon, and the dog walker finally secured it. The raccoon was then collected and transported to the state lab to be tested for rabies. The dog involved in the incident is current on vaccinations and is being quarantined by state guidelines.
The raccoon tested positive for rabies, per the Pennsylvania State Rabies Lab.
Radnor Township Police Department would like to remind the community to call 911 immediately if a sick or injured animal is sighted.
