On February 11, the Main Line Chinese Culture Center hosted its annual free admissions Community Gala, at the Great Valley Middle School in Malvern, celebrating the new lunar year of the dragon!
The performances portion of the Gala kicked off with the traditional lion dance, as two vigorous lions made their way through the audience, amid the resounding beat of drums, to the center of the stage.
The MLCCC Grace Dance Troupe then officially marked the beginning of the celebration with their “Dragons Soar and Tigers Leap” performance.
From first-grade elementary school students to eighth-grade middle schoolers, as well as students of the martial arts class, they all presented spectacular performances for parents and friends.
The dance troupe, along with MLCCC’s Fitness Club and Yoga Club, brought the performances to multiple high points with their dances and traditional costume displays, winning rounds of applause from the audience.
The Gala’s Culture Fair portion was particularly lively this year!
MLCCC’s Parent-Teacher Organization prepared countless surprises for everyone: children greedily licked large fluffy cotton candies, while adults treated themselves as well… with a bowl of Eight Treasure Congee, a taste of Shaanxi’s red date cakes, and a sampling of dozens of traditional snacks.
There were also the perennially favorite ice creams, freshly popped popcorn, scratch prize cards, and red envelope giveaways.
Various festive ornaments and financial and educational consulting sponsors’ services were lined up on both sides of the hall.
The most popular spots were the three photo booths with red, white, and black backgrounds capturing family portraits; and several calligraphers on-site writing New Year couplets.
The children’s favorite game/craft activities appeared even more lively this year with the help of several dozen high school and parent volunteers. Amongst the 15-plus game, craft, and riddle stations, a long “dragon” formed in front of the balloon artist.
This Gala was a collection of effort by hundreds of volunteers from the MLCCC Weekend School community and more than 1,000 people participated. Everyone immersed themselves in the joyful atmosphere and charm of traditional culture. MLCCC wishes everyone a healthy and prosperous year of the dragon!
