ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — An Altoona man accused of stabbing and killing his mother was arrested in 2021 for an incident with a chef’s knife, court documents revealed.
Joshua Leyo, 30, was arrested in Pittsburgh after allegedly killing his mother with a knife and then trying to take his own life by jumping from the Pittsburgh Airport parking garage, according to a criminal complaint.
Court documents show that in 2021, Leyo was also charged and later pleaded guilty to stabbing someone with a knife and lunging at a teen.
According to the May 2021 criminal complaint, Leyo was accused of coming out of his apartment with a butcher’s knife and lunging at a teen he said entered his “personal space.” The teen alleged the knife came within five or six inches of their chest.
Leyo then allegedly got into the passenger seat of the car and stabbed the driver, believed to be a family member, in the arm. Leyo claimed to police that he only meant to thrust the knife towards her and tell her to respect him and accidentally stabbed through her shirt and sweater.
When asked what started the incident, Leyo claimed he was having a “bad day” with his mental health which made him “triggered” by the neighbor’s loud music.
Court documents show that Leyo pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in Sept. 2022 and was given a maximum of 10 years probation.
