A National Weather Service-issued winter storm warning has been issued for Delaware County, the first of the season, and it is expected to run from 10 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday with the passage of the fast-moving clipper system anticipated to drop up to 6 inches of snow.
The timing of the storm couldn’t be better overnight into daybreak Saturday before tapering off. Polish those shovels for work in the morning.
The midafternoon briefing from the weather service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, read like this, in part: “Have decided to upgrade the Winter Weather Advisories to Winter Storm Warnings with snowfall accumulations of 4-6 inches for the following counties: New Castle in DE; Chester, Delaware, lower Montgomery, lower Bucks, and Philadelphia in PA; and Salem, Gloucester, Camden, and northern Burlington in NJ.”
AccuWeather says the storm will create wintry travel along segments of Interstate 95, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.
“Fortunately, for motorists in the major hubs along the I-95 corridor in the mid-Atlantic, the snow will hit well after evening rush hour Friday with most of the snow falling Friday night,” AccuWeather notes. “However, the snow may still be falling and accumulating on Saturday morning when the greatest impacts are anticipated.
The snow will be wet and clinging in nature and will mostly melt on warmer paved and concrete surfaces. However, because of the time of the snow being late at night, when most surfaces are at their coolest point, some slippery travel with slushy areas are likely on roads and walkways. Airline delays due to deicing operations are likely early Saturday morning.
“From 1 to 3 inches of snow is forecast, mainly on unpaved surfaces. Where the snow comes down hard for a couple of hours, 3-6 inches snow will fall and road conditions will rapidly deteriorate. Some natural melting of the snow is likely during the midday and afternoon hours on Saturday. However, any lingering wet and slushy areas will freeze Saturday night with patches of ice possible on some untreated roads and walks.”
Total snowfall for the season is 8.6 inches at Philadelphia International Airport.
Look for snow to overspread the area about midnight, then heavy at times during the overnight, and tapering to snow showers about daybreak, finishing as flurries. Clouds are expected to break by afternoon. Expect highs in the upper 30s with a cold northwest wind while you’re shoveling Saturday.
The AccuWeather forecast continues with a cold Sunday morning and a low near 20 degrees but warming to the low 40s by afternoon. The workweek will feature a warming trend each day, peaking with a high in the mid-50s on Wednesday and Thursday.
All that snow will soon melt away except for the big dirty mountains in the parking lots.
In the long-range AccuWeather forecast any precipitation for the rest of the month is expected to be rain, and that’s easy on the back.
Check back for updates.
