WASHINGTON (WDVM) — Three officers were injured in a shooting in Washington, D.C., Wednesday morning, Metropolitan Police have confirmed.
The department said in a statement posted online that the officers were shot in the southeast part of the nation’s capital at about 8:30 a.m. ET. No other details were immediately available.
All three officers reportedly had non-life-threatening injuries after being shot by a suspect and were taken to the hospital, the police union said.
DC Police said they were responding in the area and that the scene was still active as of 8:40 a.m. ET. Officers said the shooting took place in the vicinity of a Kipp Academy.
Police have closed multiple roads as the investigation unfolds.
Multiple elementary schools were all placed on alert status, according to the District of Columbia Public Schools.
The incident comes as the District of Columbia is struggling with a sharp increase in violent crime, which went up 39% in 2023, largely fueled by a rise in homicides and carjackings.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
