Belmar bids farewell to a true icon and beloved member of its community, Donald Iglay, better known as ‘Don’ or ‘The King.’ He passed away peacefully on February 5th with his loving sons by his side. He was a dedicated husband, an adoring father, grandfather, brother, a successful businessman, and a cherished friend to many. Don’s legacy will forever be intertwined with the town he loved so dearly, Belmar.
Don was born on February 17, 1941, in East Orange, NJ, to Frederick and Luella Iglay. While at Metuchen High School, he met the love of his life, Barbara. They married in 1962 and embarked on a beautiful journey together. Their love endured for an incredible sixty years, serving as an inspiration to many. Their marriage was a testament to the enduring power of love and commitment. After moving to Belmar in 1967, he and Barbara founded the renowned Don’s Pizza King, where they worked together for 54 years. It quickly became a cherished and beloved establishment for residents and visitors alike. It shaped them, their family, friends, and Belmar in many ways. Few locals did not enjoy a slice, pinball game, or green pizza on the St. Patrick’s Day parade. He was known for his unwavering dedication to his work and for ensuring that every customer at Don’s Pizza King felt like family. However, Don’s accomplishments extended far beyond his thriving pizzeria.
Don’s warm personality and genuine care for others made him a pillar of the Belmar community. He could often be found at Jack’s having a steak and a drink or at Taylor’s Hardware, buying all their PVC and wire ties. He was an avid crossword puzzle player who loved building, tinkering, traveling, golfing, skiing, and fishing. He supported the schools and community in any way he could. Anyone who grew up in Belmar has played on a little league or basketball team sponsored by Don’s Pizza King. He also loved his community in West Palm Beach, Florida, which he and Barbara visited many times over the years.
When he wasn’t working, Don found solace in the simple joys of life with his family, relishing moments of laughter and little conversation. He could build or fix anything. Don was a quiet man who exuded coolness, and his words made an impact when he spoke. His trademark dry sense of humor will be unforgettable. His quiet generosity to friends and family will never be wholly known. His presence brightened every room he entered, as people often said, “The King is here.”
Donald Iglay has had a profound and lasting impact on the community he held dear and his family. He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Barbara, his parents, Frederick and Luella Iglay, and his brother, Allen Iglay. He is survived by his children Russell (Juliana), Belmar, NJ, Dean (Tara), Manasquan, NJ, and his grandchildren, Curran Iglay, Morgan Iglay, Audrey Iglay, Seton Iglay, Marlo Iglay, and Rosie Iglay; and his brother, Dennis Iglay, Daytona, FL. His family will forever cherish his memory and how he touched their lives during his remarkable journey. They are incredibly proud to be a part of his legacy as many in his community are as well.
A memorial service to celebrate Don’s life will be held on February 17, 2024, from 12:30-3:30pm at the Reilly Bonner Funeral Home , 801 D Street, Belmar.
