Tuesday marks one year since the shooting death of McKeesport Officer Sean Sluganski.On Feb. 6, 2023, Sluganski and his partner, Officer Charles Thomas Jr. were responding to a domestic incident in McKeesport when Sluganski was shot and killed. His partner, Thomas Jr., was also injured but survived the incident. Back the Blue Week in McKeesport:In honor of the fallen officer’s life and service, McKeesport Area School District declared this week as Back the Blue week. School buildings are taking turns hosting refreshments all week to local police officers and encouraging students and staff to wear blue on Tuesday. Fundraiser for Sluganski family:George Nuttall, owner of Nuttall Public Safety Equipment LLC, is holding a fundraiser for the family of Sluganski from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., selling things like T-shirts, hats and commemorative coins. Memorial unveiling dedication ceremony:In August, Baldwin Borough renamed the Elm Leaf dek hockey rink as “Slug’s Deck.” There will be a memorial unveiling dedication ceremony at 5 p.m. at the rink in Renziehausen Park, McKeesport. Candlelight vigil: Baldwin Borough will be holding a candlelight vigil to remember Officer Sean Sluganski on the first anniversary of his death from 6:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m. Candles will be given out at the borough building auditorium and the vigil will happen in front of the borough building near the handicap parking area. A May trial date has been set for the man accused of killing Officer Sean Sluganski and injuring Officer Charles Thomas Jr.
