Frederick Gerard ‘Jerry’ Chesterman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on February 4, 2024, in Bay Head, NJ. He was born on March 28, 1929, in New Rochelle, NY. Jerry was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Rosemary Murphy Chesterman, sisters Peggy Chesterman, Patricia Harrington, Joan Bonner, and brother Robert Chesterman.
Jerry is survived by his children: Michael Chesterman and his wife Anne, Eileen Barton and her husband John, Jeanne Chesterman, Frederick Gerard Chesterman Jr. and his wife Sheila, Jim Chesterman and his wife Christine, and Bobby Chesterman and his wife Lynda.
He is the cherished Pop Pop of 16: Brooke, Marlene, Kristin, Katie, Paul, Caroline, Tina, Julia, Frederick Gerard III, Kyle, Grace, Sean, Andrew, Elizabeth, Conor, and Kelli. Jerry is also a great-grandfather of 7 children: Quinn, Jane, Lennon, Rosie, Louis, June, and Tommy. He is the beloved uncle of 19 nieces and nephews.
Jerry served honorably in the U.S. Army of occupation after World War II in Germany from 1945 to 1948. Following the war, he earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Seton Hall in 1953.
In 1954, Jerry married the love of his life, Rosemary Murphy. They relocated from New Rochelle to New City, NY, in 1958. For over 40 years, Jerry owned his own insurance agency in Midtown Manhattan.
Jerry and Rosemary were dedicated parishioners of St. Augustine’s Church, where Jerry served as a Eucharistic minister for 29 years. He was an active member of the Holy Name Society and held leadership roles in the Knights of Columbus, where he was a proud lefty third baseman on the softball team.
In 1987 Jerry and Rosemary retired to Bay Head where he enjoyed tending to his garden and going to the beach with his family and friends.
Jerry was a lover of dogs and an avid sportsman. He enjoyed various activities such as tennis, golf, paddleball, skiing, and surf fishing. He was most renowned on the Jersey Shore for being a professional body surfer.
He was a longtime member of the Nyack Field Club and Bay Head Yacht Club, where he cherished spending time with friends and family.
Jerry devoted over 30 years of his life to volunteering at Pt. Pleasant and Brick hospitals as well as the local food pantry. His selfless service touched the lives of many. Jerry will be missed by all his Howe Street Beach family.
Viewing hours will be held on Friday from 4-8 PM at Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Avenue, Point Pleasant Beach.
