HUNTINGDON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — One homeowner in Huntingdon County had a close call after a bear decided to take up residence under his porch.
According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission-Southcentral Region, the homeowner in Warriors Mark needed to get access to some pipes that had frozen and went for a crawl under their porch. As you can expect they were very surprised to find a bear.
The bear then ran off but found its way back to its den later that same day. The Pa. Game Commission added that the bear was scared off the next day, but then tried to make a den in a neighbor’s carport.
Wardens from Huntingdon and Mifflin County worked to relocate the bear to a more suitable area away from residential areas. They constructed an artificial den and lined it with a straw bedding material. After the den was ready for the bear they immobilized the animal and transported it to its new home.
The bear was placed in the new den which was then covered over with brush and debris to simulate a natural den site.
The Pa. Game Commission added that while they try to allow bears to remain in their preferred denning locations as much as possible, there are some situations where the human-bear conflicts require intervention.
