RADNOR – Main Line Unitarian Church (MLUC) in Devon, in fellowship with Saint David’s Episcopal Church (Wayne), Central Baptist Church (Wayne), Wayne Presbyterian Church, and Wayne United Methodist Church, is partnering with PAR-Recycle Works to offer the community a free opportunity to safely dispose of their e-waste at a morning drop-off event Saturday, March 2, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the MLUC parking lot, 816 South Valley Forge Road.
All attendees are invited inside for warm drinks, snacks, and an opportunity to chat with other environmentally concerned neighbors.
The event, championed by faith-based environmental justice groups, has a further social justice component. People Advancing Reintegration (PAR) Recycle Works is a Philly-based nonprofit electronics recycler that provides important transitional employment opportunities to people returning from prison.
“Caring for our interconnected environment–on the local, national, and worldwide levels–is an essential tenet of Unitarian Universalism,” noted MLUC minister Rev. Dr. John Morehouse. “With increasing pollution and the climate crisis we all face, it is vitally important that we join with our faith neighbors and the community at large to do what we can to protect our environment. Our future, and the future of our children, depends upon it.
Here’s what community members can drop off at the Recycling event: Laptops, iPads, computer towers, mobile phones, and most items with a plug: small appliances, e.g., toasters, vacuum cleaners, radios, tape recorders, electric shavers, disc players, power drills, power strips and cords.
PAR doesn’t accept: Large appliances (refrigerators, washing machines), air conditioners, dehumidifiers, microwaves, separate computer monitors, flat screen TV’s, CRT’s, light bulbs and alkaline batteries.
Electronic waste, or E-waste, contains numerous toxic components hazardous to human health, flora, and fauna. In 2019, 6,918,000 tons of electronic waste was generated in America alone, the equivalent of about 46 pounds per person, yet only about 15% (data from 2017) of that dangerous waste was properly collected, according to the Global E-Waste Statistics Partnership.
Main Line Unitarian Church is a liberal, inclusive religious community of diverse individuals joining together in love to support one another in spiritual growth, connection, and actions to create a more just, compassionate, and equitable world. The church has engaged in Environmental Justice initiatives for decades. Main Line Unitarian Church is at 816 South Valley Forge Road in Devon.
