Mary Anne Coogan peacefully departed this life surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in The Woodlands, TX. Mary Anne was born in Jersey City, NJ, on October 31, 1943, and grew up as the middle child of Edward and Grace Coogan, alongside her siblings Robert and Michael. Her formative years were spent in the serene shore town of Spring Lake, NJ, where she attended St. Catharine’s Grammar School, Star of the Sea Academy and earned her associate degree from Mt. Aloysius, Cresson, PA.
As a devoted mother, Mary Anne found her greatest satisfaction in witnessing her four children thrive in life. She considered her children her best achievement, ensuring each graduated from college despite the challenges of being a single mother. Balancing multiple jobs, she mastered the art of crockpot meals and orchestrated family vacations on a budget.
Mary Anne’s professional journey led her to become the Borough Administrator for the Borough of Spring Lake, serving the Borough for 30 years. She took pride in helping her community solve problems and had a soft spot for dogs. Her green thumb, recognized with a Yard of the Year award, reflected her passion for gardening, a skill she acquired through her Master Gardener’s certification.
Preceded in death by her mother, father, and brother Michael, Mary Anne is survived by her brother, The Honorable Robert Coogan (Helena), four children, John Fitzgerald (Kate), Meghan Milkowski (Ronald), Maryelyn Cousins (David), and Heather Hrap (Don), and ten grandchildren (Jack, Thomas, Allison, Sidney, Matilda, Shane, Skylar, Pierce, Shepherd, and Maileigh), with whom she shared countless cherished memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Mary Anne’s favorite charity, Something Special at Montgomery County Women’s center – mcwctx.org. A celebration of Mary Anne’s life will take place in Spring Lake, NJ, in the summer of 2024.
