Eileen D. Egan, of Avon-by-the-Sea, passed away peacefully and on her own terms on January 12, 2024. Eileen began her wonderful 93 years of life on December 24, 1930 in Jersey City. She remained in Jersey City until retiring to Avon some thirty years ago, spending many happy years sitting in the sun on what she considered to be “the most beautiful beach in the world.”
Eileen graduated from St. Aloysius Academy and went on to work in Manhattan, first for the phone company (where she made several life-long friends) and then for WestvacoCorporation, where she enjoyed an over three-decade long career. Impressively, many years into her career, Eileen went back to school at night while working full-time and graduated from St. Peter’s University.
Eileen made everyone — family, friends, friends of family and complete strangers — feel welcome and greeted all of them with the biggest smile. If she ever had a bad thought about anyone, she kept it to herself. Eileen traveled around the world, including Asia and Europe, often taking trips with her closest friends and her mom. She was an avid reader, enjoyed being in the sun, listening to all types of music (but, most particularly, the Great American Songbook) and watching Notre Dame sports. Eileen was a devout Roman Catholic with a strong faith in God; she was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth R.C. Church in Avon. Above all else, Eileen was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, aunt and grandaunt. She was never so happy as she was with her family, including her numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Eileen was welcomed into heaven by her adoring parents, Thomas and Lillian (née Lechner) Egan; her much loved little brother and his wife, Thomas A. and Michele M. Egan; and her cherished niece, Michele C. Egan.
Surviving are her much loved nephews Thomas A. Egan and his wife Mary Flaherty Egan, of Manasquan, and Michael A. Egan and his wife Maureen Scully Egan of Arlington, VA. Eileen is also survived by her treasured grandnieces and grandnephews, Michael A. Egan and his wife Katlyn , Eileen Egan Simmons and her husband Brendan, Alycia Egan-Dolan, Delia Rose (Brandon Korneluk, fiancé) and MaryMichele; her beloved great-grandnieces, Millie and Madison;and her nephew-in-law, James A. Dolan Jr., of Avon, who was her faithful companion and caregiver for the last decade of her life.
Visitation was held on Friday, January 19 from 4-8pm at the Reilly Bonner Funeral Home, 801 D Street, Belmar NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday at 10:00am at Saint Elizabeth’s RC Church, Avon, NJ. Committal to follow at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.
