The head of the Pennsylvania State Freedom Caucus is vying for the state Senate seat that represents Cumberland and York counties.
Rep. Dawn Keefer has announced she is running for the Republican nomination in the race for the 31st District, currently held by Sen. Mike Regan.
Regan has announced he will not seek re-election.
The 31st District seat has a fairly strong GOP edge, based on election results from 2016 through 2020.
Keefer, chair of the Pennsylvania State Freedom Caucus in the House of Representatives, has been an advocate for limited government.
“As (s)tate (r)epresentative, I have led the fight for commonsense policies that remove government as a barrier to economic growth in our Commonwealth,” Keefer said.
“Pennsylvania is ripe with opportunity, but the state’s economic policies too often undermine those opportunities, driving away businesses and the talent they attract. That’s why I have championed policies to remove nuisance tax rules, lower the corporate net income tax, and stop licensing expansion. We want our children to choose Pennsylvania as their destination to work and live, and if we don’t secure businesses offering highly sought-after jobs, we’ll continue to decline in population as our youth flee to more competitive states.”
Democrat Mark Temons is running for his party’s nomination for the Senate seat. A longtime community advocate, Temons is a carpenter who works for a nonprofit that designs home improvement projects for accessibility.
“I believe that leadership begins with listening. We need more listeners in the Pennsylvania Senate. We need more builders in the Pennsylvania Senate. That’s how we make our shared vision a reality and build a Pennsylvania that works for all of us,” said Temons in a YouTube campaign video.
Keefer is now in her fourth term representing the 92nd House District in northern York County.
Keefer received one of the highest scores awarded by the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) in their Award for Conservative Excellence.
Among her priorities, controlling state spending and restricting abortion rights and ending sanctuary status for cities and counties in Pennsylvania.
Keefer lives in Dillsburg with her husband Tom and their three children.
The Pennsylvania primary is April 23.
The 31st senatorial district includes Lower Allen and Upper Allen townships and Lemoyne, Mechanicsburg, New Cumberland and Shiremanstown in Cumberland County. It also encompasses York as well as Carroll, Conewago, Dover, East Manchester, Fairview, Franklin, Manchester, Monaghan, Newberry, Warrington, Washington and West Manchester townships and Dillsburg, Dover, Franklintown, Goldsboro, Lewisberry, Manchester, Mount Wolf, Wellsville, West York and York Haven.
