Magic workshop
Phoenixville Public Library hosts a free workshop, “Intelligent Magic for Grownups”, with internationally-recognized sleight-of-hand magician Steve Friedberg on Monday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 PM. Friedberg will demonstrate and teach several card effects which require no sleight-of-hand, yet are guaranteed to amaze virtually everyone to whom you show it. He’ll work with you to practice both the mechanics and the delivery (the “patter”) that will make your presentation flawless. Bring a standard deck of cards. Friedberg is a sleight-of-hand magician who delights in delivering the magical “moments of wow!” He has headlined at Hollywood’s Magic Castle, Washington Magic and the Chicago Magic Lounge. He’s also performed at New York’s Monday Night Magic. He has been awarded a “Doctor of Magic” degree from the invitation-only 4F convention, a yearly gathering of 250 of the world’s best close-up magicians, and has been admitted as a member of London’s Magic Circle. As a close-up magician, Friedberg says he prefers working with standard playing cards, saying they’re easier to shuffle than bunnies. His website is www.stevefriedbergmagic.com. Mindfulness workshop
Phoenixville Public Library will host a free, four-week workshop series on mindfulness with mindfulness educator and consultant Bernadette Smith. The sessions will be held Mondays, Jan. 22 through Feb. 12 from 6:45 to 7:45 PM. What is mindfulness and why should we try it? Mindfulness means taking time in our lives to notice what’s happening right now with kindness towards ourselves. Why try it? Many studies conclude that these practices can foster better focus and concentration, an increased sense of calm, decreased stress and anxiety, improved impulse control, increased self-awareness, skillful response to difficult emotions, increased empathy and understanding of others, and development of natural conflict resolution skills. The pandemic has added another layer of stress to our lives and mindfulness can help us build resilience and compassion for ourselves and others. In this 4-week series, participants will explore mindful listening, breathing, walking, paying attention to our thoughts and emotions, body awareness, loving-kindness, and gratitude. Discussions will include planning and sustaining a practice, topics from Real Happiness by Sharon Salzberg, benefits of journaling, and how mindfulness can help us enjoy our lives more! This series is free and open to the public. Registration for each session is required at https://ccls.libcal.com/calendar/Phoenixville or by calling 610-933-3013 x132. Attendance at each session is encouraged but not required. Email mpinto@ccls.org for more information.
