POTTSTOWN — If you’ve ever considered starting your year off on the right foot by putting it into the icy cold Schuylkill River, then mark your calendar for Monday, Jan. 1.
The weather forecast looks good for the 15th annual Polar Bear Plunge and Bonfire at Riverfront Park.
Registration for the free event starts at 9:30 a.m. and the plunge into the river is at 10:30 a.m. sharp.
There is no cost to participate in the event, sponsored every year by the Parks and Recreation Department, although donations are always welcome.
All participants must sign an indemnification and waiver at registration and those ages 16 and 17 will require a signed waiver from their parent or guardian. Children under 16 are not permitted.
Those who want to get a jump on the traditional pork and sauerkraut but don’t want to jump into the river are invited to show up for hot dogs and the bonfire.
Immediately after the plunge, the Manatawny Athletic Club will conduct its second annual Polar 5K and Fun Run. The 2.23-mile race is held in Riverfront Park. There is no need to plunge before the run unless that kind of thing tickles your fancy. To register, go to https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Pottstown/InauguralPolarRun or register on the day of the run.
Pottstown GoFourth Festival will be there helping sell new shirts on Monday as well as other merchandise to help with fundraising for the 2024 celebration.
