Patricia Marie Spang (née Larkin), passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023. Patricia was born on October 6, 1939, in Newark, NJ to Robert and Elizabeth Larkin. Her brother Michael completed the family seven years later. Pat was raised in North Arlington and after her father smashed her radio for listening to Elvis, she graduated from Queen of Peace high school in 1957. Thereafter she went to work for Prudential Insurance Company in Newark, where she met the love of her life Bernhard Spang. They were married on October 14, 1961.
They settled in Mountainside where they raised their three children: Tom, Bernie and Tricia. They were active parishioners at our Lady of Lourdes Church for many years, where Pat was also a member of the Rosary Altar Society. In addition to being a homemaker, Pat also worked as a crossing guard at the corner of Central and Virginia Avenues and then later as a hostess at Steak and Ale restaurant where she got paid to exercise and perfect her gift of gab.
In 1995, Pat and Bernie retired to Fairway Mews community in Spring Lake Heights, where she and Bernie found joy in meeting lifelong friends, playing golf and traveling to such places as Hawaii and Alaska and also enjoying spending time with their five grandchildren.
Pat and Bernie were parishioners of St. Catharine/St. Margaret Parish in Spring Lake. Pat was a proud member of the Spring Lake Women’s club and Fairway Mews Nine Holer’s.
After Bernie’s passing in 2015, she moved to Sunrise of Wall in 2019, where she enjoyed meeting new friends, and being looked after by a wonderful team of caregivers and her loving family.
Pat is predeceased by her husband Bernie, her daughter, Tricia Merlo, her brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Selma Spang of Piscataway and sister-in-law, Patricia Larkin.
