RADNOR – Former National Security Advisor, Lt. General HR McMaster US Army (ret), Ph.D., a 1980 graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy & College, visited his alma mater recently as part of the school’s Cornerstone Character Development program.
McMaster’s visit was for Valley Forge Military Academy & College to join with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution to host the town hall event highlighting the roles of veterans in the community.
General McMaster told Cadets that each of them can make a difference in the world by committing to something bigger than themselves. He suggested to the Cadets that those who have achieved great things in life have done so only after overcoming challenging conditions.
He said cadets can become agents of their lives and futures by embracing intellect, courage, and determination – and that they should expect it to be complicated.
Along with Hoover Fellow McMaster, other panelists included US Representative Chrissy Houlahan, a Democrat representing Pennsylvania’s 6th district and an Air Force veteran.
The panel reported that veterans often end up in under-employed jobs after completing their service. They challenged those gathered to embrace veterans, putting them to the highest and best use.
According to a recent Pew research study, only six percent of American citizens are veterans, so most employers or managers have never served one day in the defense of their country.
They said veterans are a diverse group, representing society’s diversity, and bring ethics to business mirroring those of military service. And they reminded businesses that veterans know leadership means putting everything before themselves. Other panelists include Lt Col Jacquelyn Schneider, Ph.D., US Air Force Reserve Command and Hoover Fellow, Negan Andros, senior program officer at the Heinz Endowments, and Dave Foster, founder and CEO of BDP Impact Real Estate.
