PARSIPPANY – Democrat Judy Hernandez is in line to win a council seat, which would break up the Republicans’ complete lock on the council in Morris County’s largest town.
Hernandez was behind on Election Night, but when all votes were counted, she is now two votes ahead of Republican Adam Kandil, according to the Morris County Clerk’s office.
Two other Republicans – incumbent Paul Carifi Jr. and Matt McGrath – were elected.
A recount is likely, but assuming Hernandez’ win holds up, the council will be 4-1 Republican come January.
Aside from the misstep in Parsippany, Laura Ali, the county’s GOP chair, sent out an upbeat election recap and Thanksgiving message to party regulars.
She said she was delighted with Republican wins across the board – from the state legislature on down to many municipal races.
As for the Parsippany recount, Ali urged supporters to keep their fingers crossed, adding that this – again – shows the importance of every vote.
As the chairwoman noted, Republicans did hold all their legislative seats, which is the norm.
However, LD-25 may be getting a little too close for comfort.
State Senator Anthony M. Bucco, the minority leader, beat Democrat Christine Clarke in the Morris portion of the district by less than 1,000 votes.
The official Assembly results were even more interesting.
The top two vote-getters in Morris were incumbent Aura Dunn and Democrat Diane Salvatore. Incumbent Christian Barranco was third.
This turned out to be purely academic as all three Republicans won West Milford by almost 2-1, thereby securing new terms in Trenton.
Very “red” West Milford is the only non-Morris County town in the district.
And on this Thanksgiving Day, the three GOP lawmakers have to be very thankful for that.
